I started my travel at 8 am Costa Rica time and walked in the door at 1 am. Both flights were wide open. Sort of sad as that's an indication that there are many people that didn't get to go home this year. But good for me as I stretched out on both flights and slept like a baby. Very different from the bus ride from Quepos to San Jose where the Tico next to me just happened to keep moving into my space, space which already isn't very big. Get out man, I'm trying to enjoy a last bit of sunshine on my face!
After my bones thawed I got a cab with a man that sort of looked like a cartoon character and he definitely talked liked one. Now, here I am back on US soil in my town and I couldn't understand a word he was saying. It may have had something to do with the fact that he had no teeth, and, I think a speech impediment.
About half way through the ride and many mumbles I think about cold weather I said I had been living in Costa Rica. Well, well, well, all of a sudden marble mouth was speaking in Spanish! Like I wasn't having a hard enough time already!!! But, much to my surprise we actually had a small conversation, in Spanish, and his last words I definitely understood..."Buenas noches guapa, usted parece Jennifer Lopez". Happy Xmas!
Even though it was late I couldn't help myself, I needed to go through the mail. Thank you, thank you, thank you to all that still sent me a Xmas card! It's always such a fun part of the season, love them (even though I must admit I never got in to sending them myself, sorry). I love the wall of babies, and not-so-babies-anymore that i can create with al the photos, I love the laugh I get when Jennie's always arrives first at the start of the season. This year, it's a different kind of Xmas, I haven't been here and people are saving money wherever they can. It was a sign of the times - saving money on stamps, perhaps saving trees by sending less paper, perhaps just saving time with one less thing to do in a busy world, and of course a reminder of the changes that I have made in my own life. Anyway, Tanir is all grown up, I actually had to read the names on the card to know that it was him (usually it's a fun game to guess by the handwriting on the outside). And, I did get Jennie's card, still wondering what day it came????
Day 1...
It's morning, first order of business, call Dad to help me out with my car. Second order of business, unsubscribe from all the catalogers that wasted their paper and postage on me. I know, blasphemy coming from a former cataloger, but it's time to save the rain forest.
Now, I wrap. For the past few years I have been recycling the Newton Tab as wrapping paper. This year, I'll be using daily Costa Rican publications called El Dia and El Nacion.
Just washed the dishes. HOT water in the kitchen sink! It's a beautiful thing!
Just went to the bathroom. Flushed the TP! Now, that's a REALLY beautifl thing!!
Hooray for Daddy! Every little girl needs one, even if she is 33 years young. Dad came over, en route while working, to get my wheels going. He gave me a little sumptin' sumptin' to fill up her tank too:) My girl is purring like a kitten, even after all the neglect. Let's hope she starts later when I need to go again.
Did I mention that flushing the paper is way cool?
Rat farts! I spoke too soon...the wheels pooped out on me. I drove it for over an hour, in my PJs (so much to do, so little time), came home to shower and change, and pphhhhlbt, won't even turn over. going to need another jump and more driving and maybe even a trip to the mecanico for a new battery? Had her checked before take and supposedly her battery is fine. She just needs a little love once a week or so to keep her ticking.
Met with Kim and Heather for chit chat, snacks and wine - good wine! Thanks for that Heatha Featha, what a treat! What a different kind of meeting this time though. The three of us, for so many years, met of desks and conference room tables (ok, and the occasional bar stool) as faithful, too-loyal, adicts of Staples. Today, we met as we all embark on new journeys, separating from the big brick building at 9/90. Bittersweet for sure, but encouraging to knowt that we are strong woman that accept, adapt and welcome the change that new beginnings bring. Merry Xmas and Pura Freakin' Vida ladies!
Did some packing, jeepers, I just got back! Gifts are wrapped and I'm tired, car guy coming in the morning. Going to put on about 3 pairs of pajamas to hop in the biscuit. And, cause Piela loves me he's going to let me put the heat on...night, night.
